Caregiver Program

Caregivers are essential health care workers.

The Caregiver Program has undergone many changes by Immigration, Refugees and Citzenship Canada in recent years. Some programs, like the Live-In-Caregiver Program and Caring for Children Program have closed, while others have opened.  Caregivers can now qualify for an occupation specific open work permit and permanent residence for themselves and their families.

Qualified caregivers with permanent job offers can be eligible for a special open work permit, as well as a spousal open work permit, while they accumulate caregiver experience in Canada to qualify for permanent residence.  This eligibility applies to two categories of caregivers: Home Child-Care Providers and Home Support Workers.
